Content Access

One of the most important ways Wiley contributes to communities around the world is by sharing scientific and scholarly content with those in greatest need. We partner with several organizations to extend the reach of critical information to medical professionals, emergency workers, government officials, and academic communities. The partnerships and efforts outlined on this page highlight Wiley's continued emphasis on improving lives through the provision of content.

Research4Life

Wiley is a founding member of the UN-backed HINARI, AGORA, and OARE initiatives. They are now collectively known as Research4Life, making online scientific content available free or at nominal cost to researchers in developing countries.

For example, as one of the world’s poorest countries, Haiti is entitled to free access to more than 80% of Wiley-Blackwell’s journals, including all those in health, agriculture, environmental studies, and related social sciences.

The Cochrane Collaboration

The Cochrane Collaboration is a group of more than 10,000 volunteers in 90+ countries who review the effects of health care interventions tested in controlled trials and observational studies. The results are published by Wiley-Blackwell as "Cochrane Reviews" in The Cochrane Library, and are freely available to all countries in the Caribbean thanks to funding by The Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences (BIREME), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Disaster Relief

Since the devastating Asian tsunami in 2004, a collection of Cochrane Reviews has been made available to healthcare workers and agencies including WHO, following crises such as recent natural disasters in Haiti, Pakistan, Chile, China, and Japan.

After the Haitian earthquake, Wiley provided health workers there with free access to all health sciences journals on Wiley InterScience (now Wiley Online Library) as part of the Emergency Access Initiative, a partnership of the National Library of Medicine, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, and the Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers, of which Wiley is a member. The initiative enables immediate online access for a set period (usually four weeks) following an incident.

In March 2010, Wiley became a founding partner of Cochrane’s Evidence Aid initiative to inform planners, policy makers, and responders about disaster management. In 2010, Wiley worked with The Cochrane Collaboration to produce a video with the goal of encouraging other companies to support the initiative. View the Evidence Aid video clip.

In April 2010, Wiley incorporated a Natural Disaster Access Clause into its electronic content licenses, allowing licensees to provide groups affected by a local, national, or global natural disaster with electronic access to licensed products via secure networks.
