In 1988, New City began using Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) as a tool for teaching and learning. PreviouslyTom was principal of Pershing Elementary School in the University City School District, and previously a fifth-grade teacher. The author of  Becoming A Multiple Intelligences School and The Art of School Leadership, Hoerr is one of two educators who writes the bi-monthly column “The Principal Connection” for Educational Leadership (ASCD).  He also publishes “Intelligence Connections,” the ASCD Multiple Intelligences Network e-newsletter and wrote a chapter for Multiple Intelligences Around the World (J-B, 2009).  In 1994 New City School self-published the first edition of Celebrating Multiple Intelligences, (10,000 copies), distributed by Zephr Press (an imprint of Chicago Review Press).
