Thomas R. Hoerr, Ph.D. has been Head of School at New City School in St. Louis, MO, since 1981. In 1988, New City began using Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) as a tool for teaching and learning. New City has become a model for other schools seeking to employ the principles of MI, hosting MI conferences and 500-700 annual visitors. PreviouslyTom was principal of Pershing Elementary School in the University City School District, and previously a fifth-grade teacher. The author of Becoming A Multiple Intelligences School and The Art of School Leadership, Hoerr is one of two educators who writes the bi-monthly column “The Principal Connection” for Educational Leadership (ASCD). He also publishes “Intelligence Connections,” the ASCD Multiple Intelligences Network e-newsletter and wrote a chapter for Multiple Intelligences Around the World (J-B, 2009). In 1994 New City School self-published the first edition of Celebrating Multiple Intelligences, (10,000 copies), distributed by Zephr Press (an imprint of Chicago Review Press).
