Overview

In 2008, Wiley initiated a company-wide Corporate Citizenship effort to formally address the key social, economic, and environmental challenges we face in our business. We carefully assessed our existing policies, practices, and initiatives. We learned from colleagues, studied best practices, and partnered with external experts to determine how we could ensure continued progress in an evolving business landscape.

We concluded that, while we were already incorporating responsible business practices into our day-to-day work, there was an opportunity for continued growth. Formalizing policies, measuring successes, and enhancing our internal and external communications about Citizenship represented key opportunities. So we put in place a structure to help us think through and address many of the critical issues and questions facing companies—and publishers—today.

To this end, we continue to enhance our practices and policies, while emphasizing the importance of collaborative work; treating others with respect; and positively influencing one another, our neighbors, and the world. Our Corporate Citizenship initiative is the formal embodiment of Wiley values that have stood the test of time.

Global Citizenship Council

A key element of Wiley’s Citizenship initiative is the Global Citizenship Council, comprised of colleagues from diverse geographic locations. The Council's mission is to develop and implement a unified global program that is fully integrated into Wiley's business strategies, drives positive change in our social and environmental management practices, and brings to light Wiley’s exemplary values and policies.

The Council endeavors to engage all Wiley stakeholders—colleagues, authors, customers, partners, communities, suppliers, and shareholders—in order to be a better corporate citizen, enhance our reputation and leadership position, and improve financial and non-financial performance.

Task Forces

In addition to naming the Global Citizenship Council a governing body, Wiley’s Corporate Citizenship initiative benefits from topic-driven task forces, which are formed when a particular need is identified. Task forces are disbanded upon completion of an assigned project, with full acknowledgement that our Citizenship work is an ongoing endeavor.

This structure ensures Wiley is capitalizing on the experience and expertise of specialists throughout the organization when it is most timely.

Task forces are continually evaluated and adjusted. Since Wiley’s Corporate Citizenship initiative was established formally in 2008, task forces have set and achieved goals in the areas of ethical supply chain, carbon emissions, corporate philanthropy, and colleague engagement.
