Its mission is to develop and disseminate high-quality data on nonprofit organizations and their activities for use in the research sector and the broader civil society. The center, established in 1982 as part of the research division of INDEPENDENT SECTOR, has been a program of the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute since its transfer to the Urban Institute in July 1996.
