How Access the Missing 3ds Max Texture Maps
If the reader does not have the image maps that ship with Max
The EarthMap.jpg and MOON.jpg files ship with 3ds Max 8 and are located in the 3dsMax8\maps\space folder. If you do not have these image maps, you can do the following:
  1. Go to: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5972446.
  2. Register for a download of the trial version. You will not have to download it. You will be sent a link to the trial version with the tutorials and maps.
  3. Click the link to access the files that you need.
  4. On the Web site that appears, click Autodesk 3ds Max 8 Additional Maps and Materials.
If the reader does have the image maps that ship with Max
You must now make sure that Max knows where to look for the image maps. Max first looks where it is told the maps are by the material that references them. Next, it looks in the same folder as the current project. If Max doesn't find it in either of those locations, then it works through the external files search path folders. To add folders to the search path:
  1. From the Main menu click Customize.
  2. Click Configure User Paths to open the Configure User Paths dialog box.
  3. In the External Files tab, click the Add button and then navigate to the folder that contains the maps.
  4. To use that folder and all of its subfolders, check the Add Subpaths check box.
  5. Click the Use Path button to add the folder(s) to the search path.
