FLUTE FOR DUMMIES: Learn to play, practice, and care for a flute the fast and easy way.

For beginning and experienced flutists, the newly published Flute For Dummies® (Wiley; 978-0-470-48445-6; December 2009) offers insider tips and helpful advice on everything from music notation and sound production to finger technique and practice routines. Written by Karen Evans Moratz, Principal Flutist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the book serves as a “Flute 101” lesson - with an accompanying CD that allows readers to play along with the exercises and listen to complete arrangements.

Besides being the ISO’s Principal Flutist, author Karen Evans Moratz is an artist in Residence and Associate Professor of Flute at the School of Music/Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University and a founding member of both the Greater Indianapolis Flute Club and the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. She was recently featured in a recital playing a duet with William “Wibb” Bennett, one of the world’s most accomplished and noted flutists.

Playing Swanlake Fantasy for two flutes and piano by Toke Lund Christiansen, Moratz joined Bennett in a November 5, 2009 performance that marked the first time she’d played in a concert setting with her former teacher and mentor. The concert was part of the visiting artist series at the Greater Indianapolis Flute Club, was sponsored by The Indy Flute Shop, IndyFlute and The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Chapter 21 of Flute For Dummies, “Ten Flutists You Need to Hear,” includes a profile of Bennett , who was presented with a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 1995 and is among the world’s most celebrated artists. He has performed with many of the world’s major orchestras, including the London Symphony, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and the English Chamber Orchestra.  Bennett is a noted soloist and has performed the world over.
