This proposed new series of textbook mini-companions, endorsed by the Art History Association, aims to provide innovative approaches to and new perspectives on the study of Art History. (It clones for Art History and Theory the recently devised series: New Perspectives on Literature.) Each volume focuses on a specific area of the discipline of Art History - here used in the broadest sense to include painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts and film - and aims to identify the key factors which have shaped the artistic phenomenon under scrutiny. Particular attention is paid to the social and political context and the historiography of the artistic cultures or movements under review. In this way the 8-10 specially commissioned 8000 word essays, by specialist contributors, which comprise each volume cohere around the central theme whilst providing insights into the broader problematics of a given historical moment. Initially, there are six proposed volumes. Their working titles demonstrate the range and scope of the series and form a context for future titles. Once developed, the first volume, to be edited by Dana Arnold, will also serve to map out the intellectual project of the series.
