Reading the Novel
The books of this series provide a practical introduction to reading the novel. Each of the several volumes involved covers a given period of the novel in both the American and the British and Irish traditions. An introductory chapter locates the novels in their historical context. A second 'How to...' chapter outlines various strands of narrative and literary theory as they apply to the fiction of the period concerned, and subsequent chapters explore key individual novels in the light of their literary historical context and the narrative procedures they employ.
