Ramesside Inscriptions
The most richly documented period of pharaonic Egypt's brilliant high culture is the New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasties, circa 1550-1085 b. c., when Egypt was one of the leading powers of the world. After the first peak of achievement in Egypt had ended with the failure of the politico-religious innovations of Akhenaten, the Ramesside kings of the 19th and 20th Dynasties sought to restore and maintain Egypt's power in the radically changing 13th and 12th centuries b. c.
Kenneth A. Kitchen has reproduced the standard hieroglyphic text from temples, stelae and other monuments, a fundamental source for the history and civilization of this vital epoch. These volumes are Professor Kitchen's translations of the inscriptions themselves, and are accompanied by a parallel volume of notes and comments.
