3 Tips for Overcoming Obstacles from Matt Morris, author of UNEMPLOYED MILLIONAIRE
- Expect them. By expecting problems, you develop a mindset that they’re normal and a routine aspect of being in business. When they’re seen as routine, you won’t burn yourself out with stress and you’ll be able to develop a positive mind-set to tackle them when they appear.
- Be grateful for them. First, be grateful to God that you have challenges to overcome. When you live a life of gratitude and thankfulness, you protect yourself from the “poor me” syndrome. Second, realize that whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. In the Marine Corps they told us “Pain is just weakness leaving the body.” The more obstacles you overcome, the easier it becomes to overcome those that come up in the future.
- Get creative. In business, the #1 way I’ve overcome my business obstacles is by thinking outside the box to re-invent the way I’m currently generating revenue. I’ve also used modeling to pull myself out of many challenges that nearly crippled my companies. By intensely studying the competition, you can see exactly what they are doing right and use your creativity to improve upon their ideas and use them as your own.
5 Steps to Becoming an Unemployed Millionaire by Matt Morris
- Follow your passion. When I decided to follow my passions instead of simply chasing the dollar, my results multiplied almost ten-fold. By being involved in a marketing a product or service you’re passionate about, work seems less like work and more like an adventure.
- Become an expert. When you decide what type of business you’re going to start, quickly put yourself in the top 1% knowledge level compared to everyone else in that industry. The formula for doing that is surprisingly simple. Read 5 books, go to 5 seminars, or go through 5 courses on your particular industry. Because most people are inherently lazy, you will be among the top 1% as far as your knowledge level because most others simply won’t take the time to do the same.
- Set regular goals and look at them daily. In The Unemployed Millionaire I explain in the chapter titled “Goal Setting is for Losers” why most goal setting that’s been taught is highly ineffective and actually works against you to achieve success. You’ll read how each goal should be laid out and how there should be 3 separate parts for each goal.
- Find a mentor. The quickest and easiest path to success is to follow someone who has already become successful. If you were going to walk through a mine field, wouldn’t it make sense to find someone who had been through it before and knew exactly where to step and more importantly where NOT to step. That’s incredibly obvious but for some reason the majority of new business owners make the disastrous decision to go it alone and figure out where the mines are themselves. Believe it or not, most highly successful businesspeople actually WANT to help others achieve success. By simply asking one of these super-successful businesspeople to mentor you, you’ll be surprised at how many will agree.
- Develop the Pig-Headed Determination to Never Give Up on Your Dreams. There are literally millions of millionaires in the world. Your mindset should be that if it’s possible for millions of others to achieve their dream, then it’s possible for you as well. The only guaranteed formula for failure is to quit. Each time you experience obstacles and failures, you’re one step closer to achieving your goal. As the founder of IBM, Tom Watson said, if you want to greatly increase your success in life, DOUBLE your rate of failure.
